For those who don’t know a new update to Google’s Android operating system has been released, that is 4.4 KitKat. This is a pretty significant update with a ton of both UX changes and new features. As well as overall better support for lower-end devices, plus better optimized core elements in the system.
On the surface you’ll notice the icons are larger and the app tray has been re-designed. For a more in depth look at the changes in 4.4 KitKat check out the list below.
New 4.4 KitKat Features:
- A new visual display – The notification bar will not be displayed while using applications or playing games.
- Sensor changes – They are far less power hungry and only collect information in scheduled batches.
- Performance updates – This update will run on mobile phones with as low as 512MB of RAM.
- Updated IR blaster software – Updated with additional support so that the IR works with more devices.
- New voice activation “Ok Google” – Say “Ok Google” and ask your device a question or give it a command. It will attempt to respond with an appropriate answer.
- Cloud printing services – You can now print using Cloud Print from Google on your mobile phone or tablet.
- Screen recording application – That’s right record whatever is on your screen!
- Improved multitasking – Applications load faster, the touchscreen response has been improved, and there are less screen glitches while changing the screen view.
- Smart caller ID – You can now sync your contact list with social media networks. Also unknown numbers will be scanned by Google maps for an image to use so you have an idea of who the unknown caller might be.
- SMS replaced with Google Hangouts – With this new SMS integration you can share different information a traditional SMS can’t.

- Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia ZL, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Tablet Z
- HTC: Droid DNA, One Max, One Mini
- Motorola: Moto G, Moto X, Atrix HD, Electrify M, Droid Maxx, Droid Mini, Droid Razr HD, Droid Razr M, Droid, Droid Razr Maxx HD, Droid Ultra
Don’t worry though if your device is not on the list there is still a chance it will get an update at a later date.
